When I relocated to Charlotte from New Jersey I knew nothing of just how big the city was and how many neighborhoods there were to choose from. I literally picked up an ApartmentGuide from a grocery store, and then chose an apartment community that looked nice enough and was offering a move-in special ! I started my new job several days later and with a near hour long work commute, I quickly learned just how big the city of Charlotte is and why it’s so important for me to guide those relocating to Charlotte on the importance of being strategic and intentional about where in the city you live.
Certainly, Charlotte is full of idyllic neighborhoods that offer everything from traditional southern charm, to thriving urban nightlife, artsy districts and picturesque suburbs. However, there are almost 200 communities throughout the metro, lets talk about several of my favorites.
Here are six popular Charlotte neighborhoods that highlight the variety and diversity you’ll find in the area.
Highland Creek:
Location: Northeast Charlotte
Residing in Highland Creek provides residents with a distinct suburban vibe. One of the largest subdivisions in the state, the Highland Creek community is located just a mile or so from the popular Concord Mills Mall and numerous retail locations, eateries, coffee houses, schools, and much more with a high walk score. When you couple that with the extensive amenities that Highland Creek residents enjoy, it’s no wonder that Highland Creek is one of the most sought after neighborhoods in the Charlotte Metro.
Myers Park:
Location: South Charlotte
When you think of traditional Southern charm, tree lined streets and historic homes, Myers Park should come to mind. Myers Park was Designed in 1905 by John Nolen and George Stephens as a streetcar community. Today, it is a thriving affluent community full of gourmet stores, fine dining and high-end boutiques.
Uptown:
Location: Central Charlotte
Uptown Charlotte, formerly known as Downtown Charlotte, is the heartbeat of the metro. Uptown is home to many corporate head offices, including BOA, Fifth Third, Duke Energy and a host of museums, theatres, eateries, retail, and other attractions make Uptown a top stop for all!
Residents love the fast-paced vibe combined with southern hospitality. You’ll find a variety of residences in Uptown, from high-rise condos to re-imagined Victorian dwellings. Uptown is also home to Johnson & Wales University as well as Johnson C Smith University.
Mint Hill:
Location: South-East of Mecklenburg County
Mint HIll is a major suburb in the southeast part of Mecklenburg County. With a population of under 30,000, the town of Mint HIll has the small town feel with big city access. Easily accessible by highway 485, Mint Hill is an ideal location for commuters whether they are working in North Charlotte, South Charlotte or even Uptown Center City.
Mint Hill is primarily residential and is known for it’s larger lot sizes and all-brick homes. The price per square foot in Mint Hill is generally lower than what you might find in other parts of the metro like Ballantyne.
Ballantyne:
Location: South Charlotte
The epitome of work-live-play, Ballantyne is known for its vast estates and country club living. “Luxury” and “upscale” are both words that come to mind when you think of the community. From the five star Ballantyne Resort and Spa, corporate office parks to the multi-million dollar residential neighborhood of Ballantyne Country Club .
Plaza Midwood:
Location: East Charlotte
Plaza-Midwood, a lively and funky district, is well-known for its eateries and thriving local shops. You always have something to enjoy here, whether it’s a festival or community events or food trucks. If walkability is something you look for in a neighborhood, Plaza Midwood is known for it.. It has pedestrian-friendly streets, and direct exposure to many of Charlotte’s biggest employers. Beer afficianados will find the finest breweries here.
